sold
Dramatically
painted with native and trade pigments: blue, red, and black, depicting stylized
ravens on each side of the bow and the stern.
The superb carving is deep,
and the gunwales are thin and smooth from each peaked end to end. The blue pigment
is very rare in 19th Century
canoes, and is probably a trade bluing acquired
from the Hudson Bay Trading Company. A few tiny chips exist along the thin edges
of the gunwales,
and the seats on the interior are now missing, but this canoe
is in overall excellent condition.
