Protoclassic, ca. 100 B.C. to A.D. 250

This pup is poised in the act of barking aggressively with teeth bared and mouth opened revealing carved teeth and the vent for this hollow figure. The naturalistically-formed ears are pricked upward, each lobe pierced with a drilled hole. The eyeballs protrude like oversized beads posing stylistic expression of defensive action. The tail curls upward in conjunction with the forward leaning head, with extended neck seeming to be triggering a lunge. He is painted light brown overall with pinkish-red highlights, and areas of black.

Dimensions: Height: 8.5 in. (21.6 cm.); Length: 12.5 in. (31.75 cm.).

Provenance: The Laszlo Sandor Collection of Pre-Columbian Art, Indian Wells, California.
