RARE NORTHWEST COAST POLYCHROME SHAMANISTIC RATTLE,
COAST OF BRITISH
COLUMBIA, 19th CENTURY.
This finely carved
and painted rattle, with multiple geometric designs and excellent native and
trade pigments, is probably from the Heiltsuk or Bella Bella Tribe
on the Central Coast of British Columbia. The design is unique among rattles,
both in form and in size, and dates to the 19th Century.
The former owner of this piece, Harmer Johnson, was the author of "Guide
to the Arts of the Americas",
which deals with both Native American and Pre-Columbian Art.
