P-3096 A Unique Mayan
Stone Hacha in the Form of a Jaguar Head, Probably Late
Classic, circa A.D. 550-950, Pacific Slope Region.
Height 8 in. (20.3 cm.)
This jaguar head is of
a rare three dimensional naturalistic form with open mouth and teeth bared.
The deep-set eyes may have had inlays at
one time, and three drill holes suggest former attachments.
Provenance: Acquired in 1970 for a Southern California Private Collection.
